Creating a Segment

A segment is a group of people that you can send push notifications to.

In this document, we are going to show you how to set up a segment. A segment is a group of people that you can send push notifications to. They are also extremely valuable for Advanced Analytics for your subscribers. You can create a segment based on a variety of factors such as location or last time visiting your website. Let's get started.


Start off by logging into your Aimtell account and opening your dashboard. From there, click on ‘Segmentation’ located in the navigation bar on the left-hand side of the screen.


This will pull up your existing list of segments. There is also a templates tab that features some examples that will give you an idea of the types of segments you can create.

You can also select any of the templates by hitting 'View Template' and if you would like to use it, select 'Use Template.' This will add the segment into your existing list of segments.


Tip: You cannot edit the segment in the template section, but once you add it to your list of segments, you can make edits to it if you like.

To create a new segment, select the blue ‘Create Segment’ button at the top right of the screen. This will open the ‘Add Segment’ page and is where you create your new segment.

For example, you can segment people based on if they purchase an item, viewed a specific page, or if they haven’t visited your website for a certain number of days.

There are 8 different Segmentation categories for creating a segment listed in the drop-down menu. Page Views, Visit, Location, Campaign, Device Info, Segment, Custom Events, and Custom Attributes. Simply select the desired drop-down for the section you wish to use for your segment and type in the necessary information to filter the subscribers.


For example, if you wish to create a segment for individuals who live in the state of California, select Region/State under the Location section.


Input the information you want (in this case you would input ‘California’ in the Region category.)

Tip: If you're not sure what to write, our auto-populate feature can help! Click in the 'segment condition' box and a list of suggestions will appear.

You can target people based on several different conditions by using AND/OR logic. For example, you can set an OR condition in order to target people in different locations (California, Virginia, or Georgia for example).

You can also add more than one segment group in order to target subscribers who meet other requirements, such as visiting a sales page on your website and using a mobile device.


You can input as many conditions as you want within a segment group. Simply click on a category and input the appropriate information.

For a condition that calls in information from other segments or other campaigns, simply start typing the name or ID of the campaign or segment and our typeahead functionality will pull up responses that match. Simply select the campaign or segment that you want to use from the populated list.


You can also segment subscribers whose subscription date is Today, Yesterday, or Two Days Ago.

For example:

Today would be 'Date of Subscription' -> 'Is' -> {today}

And Two Days Ago would be: 'Date of Subscription' -> 'Is' -> {today -2d}


When you are finished, hit ‘Create Segment.’ That’s it! You now have a dynamic and historic segment available for targeting and for analytics. This means that existing users who meet the criteria will be historically added to the segment, and new users will automatically be included if they meet the given criteria.

Tip: Need to clean up your segment list? You can bulk delete segments to do so more quickly. Select which segments you wish to delete and hit 'Delete Segment(s)' from the Options drop-down menu. You will be alerted if you attempt to delete a segment that is currently being used in a repeating or triggered notification.

You can also view the results of your Segment performance by clicking 'View More' next to your segment.

From here you can download the report of your segment, or the subscribers specific to this segment.

That’s it! Existing users who meet the criteria will instantly be added to the segment, and new users will automatically be included if they meet the given criteria.

PS, you can export your subscribers at any time by clicking the 'Options' drop down in the upper right section of your 'All Subscribers' section.

You can also copy segments across websites. Select the segment you wish to copy and from the options menu hit ‘Copy Segment.’ Switch to the website you’d like to use the segment at, click ‘Segmentation’ and then from the options menu hit ‘Paste Segment.
